Kochi Metro Rail limited has taken one more step forward to make the city Greener. Tomorrow, on World Environment Day, KMRL is starting a green drive to plant 2000 sapling in educational institutions.
Kerala CBSE School Management Association, Al–Ameen Educational Trust, Government Poly Technic, Kalamassery, Sree Narayana Vidyapeed, Thripunithura and few other organisations and institutions have come forward to join hands with KMRL in this initiative.
At Al- Ameen school, Edappilly, Shri Bennny Behanan MLA will inaugurate World Environment Day celebrations of KMRL at 2.30 pm tomorrow. In a function presided over by Adv. T.P.M. Ibrahim Khan, President Kerala CBSE School Management Association and Chairman, Al–Ameen Educational Trust, Shri. Elias George, MD KMRL will give a keynote address . District collector Shri. Rajamanikyam will also grace the occasion. KMRL is also planning to create ‘Metro Gardens’ with medicinal plants and fruit bearing trees in selected schools.
KMRL will plant 500 plants in the premises of Government Poly Technic, Kalamassery with in three months. ‘Bhoomithrasena’, a nature sensitive group of GPTC will do the watering and maintenance of these plants.
KMRL will also plant trees along side newly constructing Bund Road by GCDA.
“Apart from the compensatory planting the work contractors are supposed to do, KMRL is doing our best to make Kochi greener. The biggest challenge we are facing is the unavailability of land inside the city. So, we decided to focus on educational institutions. More than just growing the plants, students will also get a better understanding about the nature and the importance of keeping it intact” , said Elias George, MD, KMRL
KMRL’s green drive will be extended to other parts of the city through out the Metro alignment.
