The draft proposal for the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) for Kochi will be submitted before the state government by the Kochi Metro Rail next week. The proposal was circulated among the various stakeholders of UMTA and a meeting was held at the KMRL office on Friday.
The major purpose of the UMTA is to link various departments of urban transport systems. The urban transport will consist of buses, metro rail, regional railways, autos, taxis, non-motorised transport facilities such as walking, cycling and other non-fuel modes of transportation, movement of freight vehicles and intelligent transportation systems using technologies and engineering concepts to develop transportation systems of all kinds. An operation control centre, web-based user information system and a helpline to provide integrated information to users of the urban transport will also be set up as per the plan.
