Shri. Venkaiah Naidu, Minister of Urban Development, Housing, Urban Poverty Alleviation and Parliamentary Affairs took a review meeting on Kochi Metro on Wednesday, 27th August at Abad Airport Hotel, Nedumbassery. This is the first time Shri. Naidu is visiting Kerala after becoming the Union Minister. Shri. K.V. Thomas MP attended the meeting along with the MD, KMRL Shri. Elias George and other senior KMRL officials. A presentation was made on the progress and other key aspects of the project.
MD, KMRL requested for a positive support from Government of India for the extension of the Metro towards Tripunithura and to Kakkanad, the IT hub of the city. Minister promised that the Union Government would be inclined to accord clearance for these proposals expeditiously. Along with this Minister has promised to consider the request to allocate Rs.400 crore additionally in the current financial year, as this year Kochi Metro needs a total budgetary support of Rs. 879.22 crore from GoI. The Union Minister also gave a positive note to consider the proposal of water transport project for which KMRL has already submitted a project report of Rs. 52 crore to the Ministry. Minister said that since JNNURM no longer exists, the proposal would be considered in the new scheme which would be announced soon. The Minister was also presented with KMRL’s plan to develop a state-of-the-art eco-friendly smart city within the city at Kakkanad of 18 acres.Shri. Naidu also said it is impressive to note that the project would be completed within the stipulated time schedule and within the original estimate and he expressed complete satisfaction about the progress of the work.
