As part of the preparation of the detailed project report for water transport system in Kochi, KMRL had conducted a detailed discussion with representatives of all Panchayaths in the agglomeration, which have water transport facilities. K.J Sohan, Standing Committee Chairman, Cochin Corporation, Soumini Jain, Chairperson, Work’s standing committee, Cochin Corporation, Experts from UMTC( Urban Mass Transit Company Limited ) , the agency doing the DPR for water transport, officials from KMRL & SWTD were also present in the meeting.
The meeting was held to understand the requirements of people from the islands in terms of facilities in the boat, boat-jetties, possibilities of routes etc. The representatives of the Panchayaths actively participated in the discussions and provided suggestions for the betterment of water transport system in the city. Representatives from Eloor and Maradu municipalities, Elankunnappuzha, Kumbalam, Mulavukadu, Kadamakkudy & Varappuzha panchayaths attended the meeting. UMTC’s public transport experts are also visiting all the islands in the coming days to understand the existing internal transport system and the traffic patterns of the islands. The DPR is being prepared as the AFD, the French funding agency and KFW, the German financial firm together have put forward an offer of 624 crore for reviving the water transport system in Kochi.
