Kochi Metro Rail Limited is conducting a workshop on Integrated Water Transport System in Kochi on 19th Dec 2015 at 10:00 am at Abad Plaza. Honourable minister for Transport Shri. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will inaugurate the workshop in the presence of Smt. Soumini Jain, Mayor, Kochi, Shri. Hibi Eden MLA, Benny Behanan MLA, Dominic Presentation MLA and Shri. M.G. Rajamanickam, the District collector. Elias George, Managing Director, KMRL will welcome the guests and give the introduction about the topics of discussion. Experts from different areas of water transport will be participating in the workshop.
The Government of Kerala has approved this project of around Rs.819 crore, which is now with the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, prior to being considered by the Board of the German funding agency, KfW. This is not only a transportation project, but also a livelihood improvement scheme for people living along the coastline of the Greater Kochi area. It encompasses aspects like the procurement of 78 ferry boats, construction of 38 jetties, creation of access roads, electric feeder buses, boat-yards and depot, street lighting, etc. This entire concept is also a novel one built along the `One Island One Boat Hub’ concept, with a large centralized boat-landing jetty at each island, which is also a commercial and recreational space.
It is expected that this project will be a key component of the proposed Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA), which has a larger aim of making public transportation a more convenient and comfortable transportation option for all sections of society in the Greater Kochi area.
The discussions in the workshop tomorrow will be held mainly in four areas – Boats and Docking system, Integration with various transport system, Land, Environment and dredging, Operation and growth potential. Experts from these areas will lead the discussions with the stakeholders including the representatives from Panchayaths.
