A bicycle track and walkway, named, as “Street Scape” has been a long cherished dream for KMRL that has materialized into a living, breathing reality with a modern grade walkway, cycle path and beautification on both sides of Shihab Thangal Road. The project is a part of KMRL’s non-motorised transportation initiative.
KMRL is pleased to inform you that the 750-meter-long walkway-cum-cycle track constructed by Kochi Metro Rail Limited on Shihab Thangal Road, Panampilly Nagar will be officially inaugurated by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the presence of Kochi Corporation Mayor Smt. Soumini Jain, Shri. P T Thomas MLA and Kochi Metro MD, Elias George on Saturday, 23rd July at 7pm.
“One of the great advantages of the advent of the Metro would be that it encourages people to resort to non-motorised forms of transport like walking and cycling. The city streets are meant not just for cars and buses, but also for people to walk, cycle and to take the air. That is why KMRL has decided to implement this pilot Street Scape project, to demonstrate what an ideal city street would look like”, said Elias George, Managing Director, KMRL.
The 8m wide track features not only dedicated cycle and walking track that is Bollards protected at the access points but also a special tactile pavement to aid pedestrians and walkers who are blind or visually challenged as well as pedestrian friendly lighting. KMRL has also taken special care in ensuring that the walkway not only has the best infrastructure but also keeping the pathway as green as possible. After receiving numerous suggestions from Kochiites via social media platforms we decided to incorporate flora that are indigenous to Kochi and planted shrubs like the Chethi and Chembarathy and trees like Kanikonna, Pala, Poovaga (Gulmohar), Tabubia and so on.
