The existing Chambakkara Bridge

The Government of Kerala has accorded Administrative Sanction for the reconstruction of the Chambakkara Bridge into a four-lane bridge, at a cost of Rs.33.66 crore, as a preparatory work of the Kochi Metro Rail project.  The reconstructed bridge will be 310 meters in length and 8.5 meters in width.

Major stakeholders along with people representatives from the area had emphasised the need for reconstructing the Chambakkara Bridge as well as redeveloping the access to the Chambakkara Fish Market as part of Kochi Metro project as these works needed to be carried out along with the Metro works in the interests of ease of construction, economy and efficiency and also because it would be impossible to do it once the construction of metro is completed in that stretch.

Based on this, KMRL had submitted a proposal to government of Kerala along with the proposal of DMRC for an amount of 33.66 Cr. for the reconstruction of the four –lane bridge at Chambakkara along with the widening of Kunnara Park – Petta road and with the construction of the of the metro viaduct in the region

Now, the Government has approved the proposal under ‘Major Infrastructure Development Project ‘ as the preparatory work for Kochi Metro Rail project
