As we draw close to the commencement of Kochi Metro’s operations let take a detailed look at the six major stations along the Phase 1 metro line which includes, JLN Stadium, CUSAT, Kalamassery, Edappally, Changampuzha Park and MG Road. These stations are expected to be the most hustling and bustling hubs along the metro corridor and see the inflow and footfall of thousands of passengers on a daily basis.
Here’s a brief overview of the JLN Stadium Station.
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Station
Significance of the Area:
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Kochi, locally known as Kaloor International stadium is a multiple sports stadium that has a seating capacity of 60,000 spectators. It is indeed a home ground for the Kerala Blasters FC and Kerala celebrity cricket team as well. It is the third largest stadium in India next to Eden Gardens and Salt Lake stadium, Kolkata. It was built by the Kerala government combined with the GCDA (Greater Cochin Development Authority) in 1996. It is veritably one of the favorite venues for International cricket matches. Despite that, the ground is also used for many socio-cultural and political gatherings and exhibitions as well. As JLN Stadium is known beyond the nation’s boundaries for its great sporting culture, building a metro station within earshot to the stadium is truly an unerring sense of decision made by KMRL. The stadium is presently at the epicentre of Kochi Metro’s operations as it stands somewhat in the centre of the 22 station long phase 1 stretch and will also play an important role when phase 2 is constructed and completed as Kaloor has been chosen as the area from which KMRL will construct its second phase heading towards Kakkanad. JNL Stadium and Kaloor are two stations that will see a great deal of passenger inflow as the area serves as a major hub in the city connecting people with the Kaloor bus stand, the stadium and the ever-bustling areas in and around it.
Theme and Design:
KMRL is in the process of building a station at close quarters to the stadium and have decided to take “Sporting Heritage of Kerala” as the theme for metro station. JLNJLN stadium has been the host for some of most memorable sporting events, be it cricket, football or athletics. This station should capture the rich sporting heritage of Kerala like ‘Kalari’ and showcasing its achievements in athletics, football and cricket.
