Yes, you have read that right. It’s a Seed Paper Calendar – the calendar that grows into plants. Kochi Metro Rail introduced a unique seed paper calendar embedded with wildflower, herb or vegetable seeds. When the paper is planted in a pot of soil or outside in a garden, the seeds in the paper germinate grow into plants and the paper composts away leaving behind a variety of flora and no waste and zero human footprints. KMRL’s desk calendar is made completely of recycled and recyclable materials and each page is handmade using post-consumer material.

How it works? – The owner can tear each page and plant it on a pot of soil after each month. Fill your pot with 2/3 of good potting soil. Cover the prepared pot with seed paper. Spread a 1/8 to 1/4 inch layer of soil over the seed paper and tap down gently. After planting, provide good soak to the paper. During the first 10 days, keep the paper moist all the times. The water is necessary for germination. Once sturdy plants appear, water as needed.

Smt. Soumini Jain, honourable Mayor has officially released the calendar in a function held at her Chamber, Cochin Corporation by handing over the calendar to Shri. Hamsakunju, former Mayor on Wednesday. She also planted the first page of the calendar.

“Since its inception, KMRL has strived to be more than an organization that creates modern infrastructure in the city but believes in the vision for a Kochi that is not just futuristic but also environment-friendly. The seed paper calendar is one among the many initiatives designed and implemented to achieve this goal”, said Elias George, Managing Director, KMRL.
