As part of the initiatives to encourage non-motorized transport solutions and also to endorse our commitment to provide environmentally friendly transportation, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. is launching the public bike sharing system under which commuters can use bicycles free of cost to travel short distance within the city limits. KMRL MD Elias George will inaugurate the public bike sharing system on World Environment Day -5th June 2017 near the cycle rack arranged at Marine drive. This program is done in collaboration with Athi’s Bicycle Club
The aim of this project is to provide commuters free short-distance cycle rides in the Greater Kochi Region. KMRL is taking the initiative to develop non-motorized transportation (NMT) facilities and set up dedicated cycle paths, pedestrian corridors, and walkway-cum-recreational spaces.
“Metro rail systems by their very structure, induce and incentivise people to walk to and fro the metro station, and hence KMRL is committed to encouraging non-motorised mobility options like walking and cycling in Kochi. The project being undertaken through an NGO at four locations in Kochi from the 5th of June is in the nature of a pilot, and KMRL proposes to catalyze similar bike-sharing schemes to cover the whole of the city in due course”, said Elias George, MD, KMRL.
The major locations of the racks are Menaka – opposite Gateway Hotel, near KTDC, South railway station – Vivekananda Road, next to station entrance, North railway station – under the bridge, Kaloor – opposite private bus stand, Kaloor -Kadavanthra Road.
This will be a membership program and the member has to SMS while taking and returning the bicycles. The bicycles can be taken from any rack and returned to any desired rack. The member should ensure that the bicycle is locked after returning it to the rack. The bicycles can be used free of cost for 100 hours per month and the usage will automatically get blocked beyond 100 hours.
The SMS formats regarding the membership, taking and returning of bicycles are mentioned below.
To take a bicycle: rack code<space>bicycle-ID (e.g. mka 3112) to 9645511155
To return a bicycle: rack code<space>bicycle-ID (e.g. sth 3112) to 9744011777

Now the cycles are blocked. The remaining cycles are can’t ride. I hope the cycles will come back to the racks.
This initiative is one of the best thing

This is really a good initiative but, unfortunately those who took contract of this does not do things with responsibility. most if cycles are damaged. I have tried to get one bicycle on new years eve,but didn’t get.
