“When is the next bus?” conversation would soon be replaced by a few taps and swipes in Kochi. An all-inclusive transportation networking app will answer all your queries on bus timings and routes. It would also enable passengers to plan their day and routes with perfect ease.
Kochi Metro Rail Ltd and M/s. Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC) signed the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) on 19th December 2018 to facilitate installation of GPS/GPRS based Bus tracking system on 1000 private buses operating under 7 companies in Kochi.
Shri. Thiruman Archunan (Director Projects, KMRL) and Shri. Kishore Nathani (Senior Vice president UMTC) signed the JDI in the presence of Shri. Mohammed Hanish, Managing Director, KMRL; ZOPHOP CEO, Shri. Vinayak Bhavnani, Deputy Transport Commissioner, Shri. M. P. Ajith Kumar, RTO (Ernakulam) Shri. Regi P Varghese, RTO (Enforcement) Shri. K. M. Shaji and EDRAC President Shri. Rangadasa Prabhu. The representatives of the 7 private bus operating companies and the officials of KMRL were present at the function.
The objective is to install GPS devices in all the buses in GCDA/GIDA area and to offer an information-based solution to the public. This solution comprises installation, operation and maintenance of GPS devices, providing value-added services by analysing GPS feed, providing display units on information in buses and bus stops and extending the features of journey planner application for the commuters of all modes of transportation.
The live tracking of buses will be disseminated to the public through a Mobile app based Journey Planner provided by ZOPHOP – the technology partner of UMTC – which will be added on to the Kochi1 App, the mobile application system provided by KMRL’s transit card.
The on-board Passenger Information System and off-board Public Information System at some of the important bus terminals & bus shelters are also under consideration. A modern, state-of-the- art Bus Operations Control Centre is also being planned in association with Cochin Smart Mission Ltd. with monitoring facilities for State MVD, City Police & 7 bus companies.
“This ‘Informed Transit’ is aimed to ease the bus journeys and encourage people to use public transport as their default option. A fleet based Auto Rickshaw Network would soon be launched in line with the vision of the State Government, across the Greater Kochi Area, to facilitate the first & last mile connectivity with the Public Transport network”, said Shri. Mohammed Hanish, Managing Director, KMRL.
‘Seamless Transportation for Kochi’, is a Public Transport Integration project of Govt. of Kerala, implemented at 4 levels, viz. Institutional (MTA), Information Technology (ITS), Fare (Smart Card) & Physical (MRTS & Mobility Hubs) levels.
