The Kochi Metro, the one year old smart champ on the block has a crown of firsts to its credit. Here are a few of them that you must know :-
For 25% of its energy needs, the Kochi Metro relies on solar energy, which is drawn from solar panels that are placed on top of about 11 of its stations.
The metro also supports vertical gardens, which use biodegradable waste, on many of its pillars. And now, each of the KMRL employee owns a Pet Tree, that they are entitled to take care until fully grown.
Shortest Commissioning Period
The first phase of its completion, the Aluva-Palarivattom corridor is the longest to be completed within a span of four years.
The Kochi Metro is the first government run agency to employ trans-gender people. Besides this, 80% of the employees are women, some of who even man the trains.
Open Loop Cards
The Metro is also the first to make use of smart cards that will double as debit cards and can be used outside the metro system, to pay for feeder services and other commercial transactions.
Integrating Other Transport Services
Kochi Metro is also probably the first to initiate a water metro project which will integrate road and water transport in the city.
