The Phase 1 Extension of Kochi Metro from Maharaja’s (M.G Road) to Thykoodam was inaugurated on the 3rd of September 2019, making commuting through the busiest roads of Kochi super-fast and block-free. A welcome move for Kochiities plagued by traffic snarls, this 5.5km stretch with 5 stations will make life easier for thousands of commuters, every day. The new stations in this route include Ernakulam South, Kadavanthra, Elamkulam, Vyttila and Thykoodam.
The new stretch was inaugurated by Chief Minister Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan, in the presence of a host of dignitaries including Shri. Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs; Shri. Durga Shanker Mishra, Secretary (MoHUA) & Chairman, KMRL; Dr. E. Sreedharan, Principal Advisor, DMRC; Shri. AK Saseendran, Minister for Transport; Shri. Tom Jose, Chief Secretary – Govt. of Kerala; Shri. Hibi Eden, MP; Dr. Jasper Weick, Deputy Ambassador, German Embassy and Ms. Catherine Suard, Consulate General of France; Shri. PT Thomas, MLA; Shri. Swaraj, MLA; Shri. S Suhas, District Collector, Ernakulam and Smt. Soumini Jain, Mayor, Kochi Corporation.
Shri Pinarayi Vijayan took an inaugural ride onboard with Shri. Hardeep Singh Puri and several other dignitaries. This was followed by a grand function at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium where the launch of construction of the Petta – SN junction stretch and water metro terminals was held.
The newly opened Maharaja’s – Thykoodam stretch forms the second part of Kochi Metro’s Phase 1 from Aluva to Pettah, totalling 25.65km. The final leg of the 1.2km Thykoodam – Petta corridor is expected to be operational by March 2020.
Kochi Metro’s Water Metro Terminal, which is a one-of-its-kind project that will connect 38 boat jetties with 15 routes, will make commuting for people in islands/coastal areas easier and faster. The first set of boats will be ready by March 2020. The event also marked the beginning of the Petta – SN Junction stretch construction, which will include two stations – Vadakkekotta and SN junction.
Kochi Metro also honoured Nurses for their dedication and selflessness, by offering them the first ride on the metro from Maharaja’s to Thykoodam. They were accompanied by Smt. KK Shailaja Teacher, Minister of Health & Social Welfare.
62,938 passengers used the Metro on the day of the inauguration, which in turn marked an increase in the number of metro commuters by 20,000 – in a single day.
